Patellofemoral Syndrome


Patellofemoral syndrome describes the pain in and around the knee cap (patella) which is associated with damage or inflammation to structures of the patellofemoral joint. It is usually the result of the knee cap not tracking smoothly, which can be caused by many factors.

Causes

Abnormal biomechanics
Flat feet Inadequate strength of gluteals, VMO.       
Overactive/tight TFL/iliotibial band.

Signs & Symptoms

Pain around the knee cap.
Pain can be brought on with:
Prolonged sitting
Walking up and down stairs
Squatting, kneeling.
Running
Grinding of the knee

Treatment

Avoidance of aggravating activities.
Ice after activity.
Stretching the lateral thigh. (remassagetherapy.wordpress.com/)
Taping of the knee cap.
Strengthening exercises.
Advised to see your physiotherapist for further information.
