Whiplash

Whiplash refers to the injury to any of a number of structures in the neck as a result of a sudden acceleration/ deceleration force.

Causes

Motor vehicle accident
Contact sports

Signs and Symptoms

Usually there is little or no pain immediately after injury
Gradual increase in pain over the next 2-3 days
Pain is usually felt in the neck and occasionally in the head, shoulders and/or arms
May be a dull ache or sharp pain made worse by movement.

Treatment

Activity modification
Soft tissue therapies
Gentle mobilisation
Stretching and strengthening exercises
Consult your GP for pain relief and anti-inflammatory medications

Advised to see your physiotherapist for further information.
