SPORTS INJURY UPDATE – SHIN SPLINTS
Shin splints, or more accurately, medial tibial stress syndrome is a prevalent problem commonly treated by physiotherapists. Shin splints are common in runners and those who play sports such as football, soccer, basketball and netball. Shin splints are a result of repetitive, excessive forces being placed on the muscles and connective tissue connecting to the shin bone. Common treatment for shin splints include ice, stretching, soft tissue mobilization, acupuncture, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication and most importantly identifying and correcting biomechanical issues.
